Water Songs is the latest release from Balloon Club, one of the many recording aliases of Portland Oregon's highly prolific Aaron Liu. Liu first came on to the Portland scene with his power pop group Two Moons. Since then he has formed many highly prolific solo recording projects including but not limited to Ghost Pop, Lune, Blue Domino and Balloon Club. Liu has also contributed his guitar and synth work to great Portland bands like Floating Room and Helens among many others. In the past under the Balloon Club moniker, Liu penned songs equally influenced by pop music as by ambient, with songs at times sounding akin to the likes of Stars of the Lid and other times Brian Wilson, or both in the same breath. This latest release is different though, unlike his past Balloon Club records that are buried under tape hiss and murky synths, the production here is crystal clear and the instrumentation is relatively straightforward for a rock record. The intricacies here lie in the melodies that instantly hook your brain and the licks and riffs that will leave listeners begging for more (Aaron is one of the most proficient guitar players on the Portland scene). Water Songs is an example of an artist finally breaking the mold and allowing themself to soar, a marvelous achievement of a musician functioning at peak form.
